European of the Year Award

>From Helsinki to Athens, the value of the Euro regularly grabs
headlines, but what of the value of our citizens? Who are the heroes
and heroines who fight to make Europe a better Community to live in?

On 18 October 2000 at the European Parliament in Brussels, an
individual and an organisation shall be nominated as "European of the
Year" and presented with the SOLIDAR* Silver Rose Award by Anna
Diamantopoulou, EU Commissioner for social affairs and employment. The
event will be chaired by Glenys Kinnock MEP and Honorary Member of
SOLIDAR.

Nominations have been made from all over Europe and include Austrian
politician Dr Caspar Einem, who has fought tirelessly for the rights
of immigrants and prisoners; Doreen and Neville Lawrence, parents of
Stephen Lawrence who was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack in
the UK, and whose fight for justice unearthed evidence of
institutional racism in the Metropolitan police force; Rodney
Bickerstaffe, General Secretary of UK Trade Union UNISON, and a man
who has fought continually for the  rights of all men and women;
"Media for Democracy" an association which aims to develop and improve
the contribution of the media where the freedom of the press is
threatened especially across borders in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo;
Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming advocating practices
that enhance the health and welfare of people, animals and the
environment, and "United for Intercultural Action" a European network
against nationalism, fascism and racism, for their campaign "Death by
policy - the fatal realities of Fortress Europe."

Trade and economics dominate the legislative timetable in the European
union and include subsidies for tobacco growers reaching almost 1
billion euro. Now social NGOs fighting against racism, sexual
discrimination and social exclusion and on behalf of people with
disabilities are asking the Commission to put in place urgently a
framework of consultation and measures which will provide a secure
funding base for their work with the European Union.

The prize giving will be followed by a short press conference.
