Fwd: Conference on integrating immigrants and minorities,
Namur, September 7-9, 2000

Conference discusses innovative policies on immigration and minorities

Strasbourg, 4.9.2000 - Policy-makers and activists from 41 European
countries are to meet in Namur (Belgium) for a conference aimed at
highlighting new challenges in integrating immigrants and minorities.

The conference, organised by the Council of Europe, will launch two
major reports recently adopted by the European Committee on Migration:
Diversity and cohesion: new challenges for the integration of
immigrants and minorities, prefaced by Czech President Vaclav Havel,
and Framework for integration policies.

Against the backdrop of outbreaks of ethnic and racial violence and of
persistent discrimination of immigrants and minorities, the reports
highlight the value of diversity. The innovative concept of valuing
diversity in all spheres of society as described in the reports will
guide future Council of Europe work on community relations.

The main theme will be diversity and cohesion, with presentations by
the report authors and a round table discussion on the first day. The
second day will take a workshop format, with groups studying the
economic and social aspects, cultural identities, combating
discrimination and monitoring and assessment machinery.

The conference will be held at the Theatre Royal, Namur on September 7
and 8. It will be chaired by Thierry Detienne, Social Affairs and
Health Minister of Walloon Region Government, and opened by Laurette
ONKELINX, Vice-Prime Minister and Labour Minister of the Belgium
Federal Government and officials from the Council of Europe. The
session will be continued on September 9th in the parliament of the
Flemish Community in Brussels.

The conference is open to the press.
